This book explores the understanding of the commonly listed eight parts of speech in English language grammar which include; nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. One should not ignore those who speak of 12 parts of speech. However this books limits its scope to the 8 though due to the paramount importance attached to articles, in the grammatical structure of sentences, they are briefly treated. The words of the 8 parts of speech in traditional grammar generally bare similar grammatical properties and play similar semantic behavior. Yet these parts-of-speech are not only the gist and core of English grammar but also a category of words that have similar grammatical properties. Beyond any reasonable doubt, understanding them is beneficial for analyzing the meaning of each word and role they play in a sentence. By learning them, thus, a student can easily identify a grammatical problem, be it an error, mistake, run-over sentence, misuse or problem of verb agreement; understanding them also helps a student determine how words function in a sentence and ultimately not only enable him to construct correct sentences but can also eventually become an effective, efficient and proficient communicator according to the rules, principles and structure of English grammar.
