This book follows the crew from flight training in 1943 up until they bailed out of their badly damaged aircraft on 13 April 1944. Once they landed, their lives changed forever. They experienced fear, cold and hunger. Fortunately for them, members of the Belgian and French resistance took care of them. Several airmen were arrested and endured horrific prison conditions, not to mention the so-called death marches. Finally in late April 1945 came the liberation of the camps and return to their families.

Depuis toujours, Isabelle Engels aime l’histoire. Un jour, l’occasion d’écrire une page vécue par ses grands-parents paternels s’est présentée. Un an plus tard, les interviews de différents membres de sa famille devenait un livre intitulé « Bataille pour Warnach 1944 ». Ensuite, un bombardier américain, un B-17, se mit sur sa route et l’amena à faire un travail de détective sur une dizaine d’années pour découvrir l'histoire de l'équipage tout au long de la deuxième guerre mondiale, récit publié sous le titre d’ « Odyssée d’un équipage américain en 1944 ». Toujours partante pour un nouveau challenge, Isabelle Engels a entrepris des recherches sur les actions de résistance accomplies par son grand-père paternel et deux grands-oncles, travail réalisé grâce aux souvenirs des oncles, tantes, cousins et cousines sans oublier les Archives. « Je pars en mission – Actes de bravoure à Hamawé et à Gomery – 1940 – 1945 ». 1944 – 2014, 80 ans de liberté et de paix en Belgique, le moment est parfait pour rééditer le premier livre avec l’ajout d’informations, un nouveau titre et un nouveau format.

At the end of their training as pilot, machine gunner, radio operator and bomber officer, ten men will form a bomber crew aboard a B17 Flying Fortress. It is in Grafton Underwood (United Kingdom), home of the 384th Bomb Group, that the crew will take possession of a B17 nicknamed The Joker. During the mission of April 13, 1944, seriously damaged during the attack before Schweinfurt (Germany), the aviators had to parachute. In Bérismenil (Belgium), The Joker hits the “Les Crestelles” hill. In the wreckage is the body of James H. Young, who instantly became the son of the village. An odyssey begins for the crew made up of fears, encounters with resistance fighters and traitors, solitude or with other aviators, arrests, prison camps, lack of hygiene, malnutrition, deaths, escape to Switzerland, death march before the long-awaited liberation. From the USA, via Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France, Poland and Switzerland before returning home.
